The Peter Rabbit Cafe in Jiyugaoka

There is a number of character cafes in Tokyo and Peter Rabbit Cafe has been on my list since quite a while. Unlike many of the other cafes this one, dedicated to Beatrix Potter children books character, is not a temporary shop so I thought I could wait for the right occasion to visit it. The right occasion came last weekend when I brought two friends from England to the exploration of Jiyugaoka, one of my favorite not-so-touristy Tokyo neighborhoods. Peter Rabbit cafe is located 5 minutes by foot from Jiyugaoka station and from Shibuya it takes 10 minutes using the Tokyu Toyoko – Minatomirai Line to get to Jiyugaoka.

Needless to say my friends loved it and our lunch was a success. The Peter Rabbit Garden Cafe will make you think you have been transported to the British countryside the minute you see the facade, it is adorned with lush green and there is even an old style red telephone booth with an actually working public phone inside, probably one of the few remaining in Tokyo.

If you are familiar with the stories you will find some related items around like the jacket lost by Peter Rabbit in his first story and used by Mr. McGregor to make a scarecrow. If you are not familiar with the stories, like me, you will enjoy the place anyway for its genuine atmosphere and the relaxed and familiar environment.

Inside the restaurant the decorations remind a classic cottage and the maids are also dressed as old times countryside girls. Every table hosts a plushy  from the Peter Rabbit stories and on the table there are a couple of children books, perfect to challenge your Japanese reading skills.

The menu includes many options to choose from and the prices are the average family restaurant prices, 1000 円 for a simple omurice (omelette filled with rice) with side vegetables, up to 1500 円 for more elaborate dishes like gratin or hamburger and around 1800 円 for a meal set including bread, soup and a drink. The food is served in Peter Rabbit plates and arranged with care and cute touches such has  vegetables cut in a rabbit shape and the peter rabbit mark on the bread. Hot drinks such as coffee are served in Peter Rabbit mugs that can be purchased in the small shop at the entrance along with other themed goods like tote bags and stationery.

If you are a nostalgic of childhood, a Peter Rabbit fan or simply a cute places addicted I strongly suggest to visit the Peter Rabbit Cafe and then explore the secrets of Jiyugaoka.
